As part of a structured approach to team building/development. A good idea is to use a motivational speaker at one of a regular series of meetings or training events. For example you might have a motivational speaker at one event in three or involve a motivational speaker in tandem with more formal training. It is also a good idea to draw motivational speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds. Whilst it can be inspring to have a famous name and/or someone who has climbed a mountain or crossed an ocean on a tea tray above all it is vital to have a motivational speaker that your delegates can relate to.

Do your research and take the time to talk to a number of speakers before making a final decision.

The members of Brigg Round Table gathered at Elsham Golf Club just outside the town on Thursday September 1st to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their organisations charter. Guest of honour was John Payne National President Round Table of Great Britain and Ireland.

A black tie dinner was followed by an after dinner speech from Harrogate based Terry Ryan who had his audience laughing and applauding. Terry said “its quite an honour to be invited to speak at such an important occasion and I know I was personally recommended for the event - the evening clearly mattered very much to the members and their VIP guests” “I’m really pleased the enjoyed it so much - I had a lot of postive feed back afterwards” he added.

Harrogates Terry Ryan was in Anglesey on Monday 27th June to deliver a key note speech about responsibility and leadership to a group of Senior Team Leaders at the Magnox Wylfa nuclear power station.

Sue Evans Personal Assistant to the Site Director said “The thorough background work and liaison with the site management, carried out by Terry prior to the day, ensured that he fully understood the nature of the event and the people attending. The added twist to the presentation involved a ‘one-to-one’ interview with our Deputy Site Director which was very well received. Terry’s delivery was very polished and professional and he really put across the simple message of taking personal responsibility linked into ‘back to basic’ leadership”.

Terry uses humour to illustrate key points. He said “it was a thoroughly enjoyable assignment and there was absolutley no sign of a power cut whilst I was speaking”

Harrogates Terry Ryan won the Yorkshire Post Trophy in the Association of Speakers Clubs (ASC) prestigious Vale of York Area Speech Contest on Saturday 15th January with his humorous speech “Thanks A Bunch Nancy.”

Terry was delighted with the win which takes him through to the next stage of the ASC’s national speaking competition which could ultimately lead to a place in the final in Edinburgh on April 16th.

Terry said “its especially rewarding to get a first place firstly because the quality of the competition was very high but also because every stage of this competition is judged by a panel of judges made up of fellow public speakers who know exactly what they are looking for from a speaker”

19 August 2010
Dear Terry
Safe and Sound at Work- “Do Your Bit” campaign and training interventions.
I am writing to you in relation to HSE’s GB wide campaign to communicate the benefits of worker involvement in health and safety to organisations and in recognition of your significant contribution that has driven marketing and recruitment activities, despite this being a period of political change that has presented many new challenges to say the least.
This work is a key tenet of HSE’s new strategy and without your knowledge, skills, professionalism and commitment I have no doubt we would have not had the success we have had to date. The strategic marketing plan you developed for the tender stage, and that you ensured was implemented following the award of the contract, has been a fundamental element in helping us to achieve our objectives to date.
HSE and my colleagues appreciate the personal drive and effort you have brought to this project, and I would like to thank you on behalf of everyone involved for a job extremely well done and you leave us in an excellent position to achieve our objectives.
On a more personal level, I have really enjoyed working with you over the last year and your input and support has been first class.
Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you every success in your next project and again for assisting in the promotion of an important government initiative that I am assured is making a difference to the health and safety of many workers in high risk industries.
Yours sincerely

Paul Cook
HSE Lead Policy Adviser – HSE Worker Involvement and Inclusion Team

It is also a good idea to draw motivational speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds.
