Praise for Harrogate speaker at worlds largest nuclear power station

Harrogates Terry Ryan was in Anglesey on Monday 27th June to deliver a key note speech about responsibility and leadership to a group of Senior Team Leaders at the Magnox Wylfa nuclear power station.

Sue Evans Personal Assistant to the Site Director said “The  thorough background work and liaison with the site management, carried out by Terry prior to the day, ensured that he fully understood the nature of the event and the people attending.  The added twist to the presentation involved a ‘one-to-one’ interview with our Deputy Site Director which was very well received.  Terry’s delivery was very polished and professional and he really put across the simple message of taking personal responsibility linked into ‘back to basic’ leadership”.

Terry uses humour to illustrate key points.  He said “it was a thoroughly enjoyable assignment and there was absolutley no sign of a power cut whilst I was speaking”

19 August 2010
Dear Terry
Safe and Sound at Work- “Do Your Bit” campaign and training interventions.
I am writing to you in relation to HSE’s GB wide campaign to communicate the benefits of worker involvement in health and safety to organisations and in recognition of your significant contribution that has driven marketing and recruitment activities, despite this being a period of political change that has presented many new challenges to say the least.
This work is a key tenet of HSE’s new strategy and without your knowledge, skills, professionalism and commitment I have no doubt we would have not had the success we have had to date. The strategic marketing plan you developed for the tender stage, and that you ensured was implemented following the award of the contract, has been a fundamental element in helping us to achieve our objectives to date.
HSE and my colleagues appreciate the personal drive and effort you have brought to this project, and I would like to thank you on behalf of everyone involved for a job extremely well done and you leave us in an excellent position to achieve our objectives.
On a more personal level, I have really enjoyed working with you over the last year and your input and support has been first class.
Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you every success in your next project and again for assisting in the promotion of an important government initiative that I am assured is making a difference to the health and safety of many workers in high risk industries.
Yours sincerely

Paul Cook

Your Event: How to Select a Motivational Speaker

Broadly speaking there are two styles of motivational speaker. The Self Motivator and the Leadership Motivator.

Self Motivators may have a background in sports or the military. They may have overcome a severe difficulty in their lives. Leadership Motivators are usually from a business background or have had a leadership role in the Public Sector

Choosing a Motivational Speaker for your event means understanding and anticipating the needs of the audience. In particular you need to understand what they want from the event. and the message you want them to take away. These things are important because they form the basis of the brief you will give to prospective speakers.

For example if you want attendees to review their personal and business goals and go on to take increased levels of responsibility you should consider a Self Motivator style of speaker.

If you want to build team spirit, communication skills, leadership, and develop a profile for a shared vision the Leadership Motivator style will suit you better.

Our advice is to look for a speaker who has experience that your audience can relate to. Hearing about climbing a mountain, enduring incredible hardships and overcoming them can be uplifting but someone who has faced the challenges of building a business or leading a team in a way that your audience can identify with may be more valuable. By all means opt for a “household name” but ensure the speakers experience and expertise relates to both your budget and the real needs of the audience. Best value can often be achieved by identifying a speaker who has operated in the commercial world and has some scars to show for it!

It is crucial to satisfy yourself that the speaker will provide a bespoke speech closely aligned to the needs of your audience. To help you achieve this set out your requirements in writing giving a high level overview. This will help both you and your chosen speaker. This should be no more than a page of A4. Explain why the event is necessary and why you want to use a motivational speaker. Then set out the goals of the event and its theme. Describe any challenges facing attendees or the organisation. Touch on any history and any future objectives the organisation has.

Ensure that your speaker will work with you as you prepare for the day. Look for someone that will visit your workplace and meet key individuals in advance.
